June’s filmmaker of the month!

Huddersfield filmmaker Ross Birks is this month’s Bradford Big Screen Filmmaker of the month for his innovative music video made on a zero budget.

Ross, who has recently set up a video company with two friends, directed, shot and edited the video, Days and Nights by local band, The Dukes of Bevington.

The 23-year-old offered to make the video for the band because he loved their music but he had a tough brief – all he had to work with was an empty warehouse and a giant white frame.

Winner Ross Birks said“It was a tough call but I came up with a plan. We spent the day experimenting with the frame in the warehouse and Days and Nights is the end result. It just shows how creative you can be when all you have is your imagination to solve problems. I  hope that people like it!

I’ve wanted to make films since I was six years old and I have just never thought about doing anything else. I am delighted to win Big Screen Bradford’s Filmmaker of the month – it’s just great recognition of my work.”

David Wilson, Director of Bradford City of Film, said: “What we loved about Ross’s film was his creative instinct and utter determination not to be put off from making a very eye-catching video with no budget and few resources. The end result is slick and very watchable.”

The film will be shown on Big Screen Bradford and the website throughout July.  The 12 finalists for each month from 2014 will be judged by a panel of senior media executives at the end of the year and the winner will receive a £1,000 prize with the further opportunity to profile their work on the screen.
