He is currently a designer for My Last Car, an exhibition and performance about the past and future of the motor car; devised by 509 Arts (Shipley), for the Cultural Olympiad.Steve Gumbley is a Bradford born artist who makes intriguing art installations, museum exhibits, theatre shows, carnival sculptures and kinetic art. This exhibition will show video and photographs of his own work and collaborations with other artists.

There will be two large exhibits about moving images –

The Piccolo Travelling Cinema”; an elaborate fairground style cinema, made in collaboration with filmmaker Jack Lockhart.

And…”From Horsepower to Hydrogen Power” a mesmerising shadowgraph machine, originally commissioned by Chrysalis Arts for the Slow Art sculpture trail at Bolton Abbey. It projects moving shadows of power stations, pylons and galloping horses around the walls of the room. It works like a modern prayer wheel; a mechanical meditation on the theme of energy.

Steve has selected social History objects from Bradford Museums hidden store rooms. Look for film projectors, and superb models of gas works, Jowett Cars, and traction engines.

Responses to art: new approaches –

Thursday 6th February 2014, 10:30am -2pm

Using found or made objects and various light sources, particpants will create transient images which can then be photographed and filmed.  We could consider ways in which these ideas and techniques might inform our work; this session aims to encourage us to consider non traditional ways of making art. It would be good if workshoppers can bring found objects which cast interesting shadows, e.g. small animal skulls and bones, mesh or lace, toys, filigree leaves etc. You will also need to bring a camera if you want to record your work.

Numbers are limited.  Book by phone: 01274 435900

Cost: £5.00 payable on the day.
