Film Nation UK

National Youth Film Festival

The very first National Youth Film Festival will take place from 21st October – 8th November 2013.

The festival is a UK wide celebration of film and education, especially for schools and youth groups, and aims to help educators to engage with and bring learning to life for 5-19 year olds.

The festival aims to inspire young people to watch, make and use film in new and creative ways that support their education and personal development, all while building a lifelong passion for film.

As part of the BFI’s Education Scheme, the festival is supported by new film education industry organisation FILM NATION UK and many industry partners including Cinema First, and delivered by National Schools Partnership. FILM NATION UK builds on the work of leading film education charities FILMCLUB and First Light.

The opening film for secondary schools will be Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant. The event on 21 October will see a satellite link up from the Bradford Media Museum in which Barnard and young actors Shaun Thomas and Conner Chapman will take part in a Q&A.

The Selfish Giant is also kicking off the BFI player that is due to launch on the 18th October. The BFI Player enables you to watch great films without subscription. It is a video on-demand service from the British Film Institute (BFI) which is, for now, only available to UK customers.

It features cherished contemporary and classic films, hand-picked from our renowned festivals, cultural programme and the BFI National Archive. Great films have a new home. The BFI player will show Clio Barnard’s BFI co-funded coming-of-age drama The Selfish Giant, a day-and-date release with its UK-wide opening on October 25 that will cost viewers £10 for 30 days’ access.
