Practical advice on making a film

There are many aspects to film making from scriptwriting to editing and there are many organisations who can offer practical advice from legal matters to camera work and finding actors.

Shooting People . This independent filmmakers network has an online resource section with sample contracts

Raindance  The UK’s answer to Sundance Film festival!  They run training courses and publish handy how-to tips and practical guides on their website.

BBC Film Network  – has a filmmaking guide and provides a showcase for completed short films.

Equipment to make a film

Bradford City of Film has filmmaking equipment available to local filmmakers and local groups and organisations who want to make a film, available to hire through Fabric

What’s available?

  • 2 Canon HV30 HD Video Cameras
  • 2 Manfrotto 501HDV/525 Tripod Kits
  • 2 Rode NTG2 Directional Condensor Microphones
  • 1 Sennheiser EW100 G2 radio microphone
  • 2 Rode boom poles

Fabric also has an additional Canon HV30 camera to hire.

To hire any of this equipment, contact Fabric on 01274 370 291 or via email  and let them know when you would like to book equipment. The equipment is very popular, and it is hired on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no cost to hire equipment, but a deposit of £100 is required per camera or sound kit hired, which will be returned upon the return of the equipment, provided that the equipment is in the same condition as when it was hired.

As part of the hire agreement, the hirer agrees to use the Fabric and Bradford City of Film logos on the completed film project.

Additionally, once you’ve filmed and are looking to edit, Fabric also has a small Mac Pro editing suite available in the office, which you can also book for no cost.  Contact via the above details.

Production support and help

If you want to make a film Fabric can help you find production support, crew, post production support , and actors. They are also able to put you in touch with the Bradford Film Network – a network of local film makers who may be available to make and edit your film for you.

Finding actors

There are many casting facilities available online including:

Spotlight - The industry standard casting resource – join to get access to all UK actors and actresses photos and resumes. 

Casting call pro  - An online database of actors looking for work.

 You could also try contacting local theatre companies to find actors.
