Bradford Community Cinema 2013

A brand new community cinema initiative is set to transform venues in Keighley, Ben Ryhdding and Bradford into pop up cinemas, as Cine Yorkshire and Bradford UNESCO City of Film announce an exciting new partnership for 2013. Bradford Community Cinema launches at Bradford Cathedral on Friday 25th January at 7pm, with a special screening of This Sporting Life (Lindsay Anderson, 1963, cert 15), followed by a Q&A session with Rugby League legend Brian Noble. The Oscar nominated & BAFTA award winning film, which observes a successful young rugby player as he struggles with his personal demons, shot at locations across the region, including Leeds, Wakefield and Bolton Abbey. The screening is part of Bradford Cathedral’s Artspace programme, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the completion of the east end.

Other venues participating in the new Bradford Community Cinema initiative include; The Wheatley Arms in Ben Rhydding, where there will be a series of ‘film & supper’ evenings, Culture Fusion at the YMCA in Bradford, who will be screening a programme of films to entertain their young audiences and Keighley Central Hall, home to the newly established Keighley Film Club.

Rachel McWatt, Cine Yorkshire Project Manager at the National Media Museum says:

‘’ We hope to reach an increasingly diverse audience for cinema in Bradford by working closely with each venue to develop a specially tailored programme and providing new and exciting ways for people to share and enjoy film. We’re delighted to be starting the new year by welcoming these new venues on board and particularly excited about extending Cine Yorkshire’s screening programme into urban areas for the very first time with our local partners Blaize, thanks to support from Bradford UNESCO City of Film.’’

David Wilson, Director, Bradford UNESCO City of Film, says:

“The Bradford Community Cinema initiative gives us an opportunity to spread film fever right across the Bradford District following a successful model developed by Cine Yorkshire across the wider region. I’m really pleased that we are working in both rural and urban settings and across a broad audience range. I hope that people will take advantage of digital cinema coming to their locality to enable us to expand the scheme in the future.”
